New Five-year Plan to lead Work Health and Safety Reform

11/04/2019

The development of a 5-year plan is one of 58 recommendations from the Queensland Government Workplace Health and Safety Best Practice Review.

The 5-year plan will focus on four primary areas:

  • Technology and innovation
  • Designing health and safe work
  • Fostering a culture of health and safety
  • Regulating effectively

The Best Practice Review of Queensland Work Health and Safety was conducted following the fatal, high-profile incidents occurring at Dreamworld and Eagle Farm in 2016.

The review and recommendations were completed by an independent reviewer, Mr. Tim Lyons, appointed by the Honourable Grace Grace MP, Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Minister for Racing and Minister for Multicultural Affairs.

Mr. Lyons provided 58 recommendations including a five-year strategic plan. The Work Health and Safety Board, the peak advisory board made up of representatives from employer associations, trade unions, and academia, have developed and delivered the five-year plan in response.

Minister Grace Grace has praised the plan saying:

“The plan reflects fresh and contemporary thinking, with close consideration to current and emerging global trends and their impact on work health and safety across government, industry, workplaces, and community,”

Furthermore, Minister Grace Grace has confirmed that 90% of the recommendations were fully implemented or well advanced.
