Suspect Item Assessment Training - WorkSafe Secure

Suspect Item Assessment is the training accreditation suitable for people who are required to recognise and assess if items are of a suspicious nature.

Our 3-hour course delivered by leading industry experts provides a comprehensive operational framework in the assessment of an item as to whether it is suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED), or not.

WorkSafe Connect’s Suspect Item Assessment course uses the Queensland Police Service principle of Person Object Place (POP) as part of the assessment within this program which focuses on key areas including:

  • Procedures - Ensure dedicated procedures are in place to manage the location of a suspicious item
  • Training - Undertake training to conduct an assessment of a located item
  • Assistance - Have on hand and use the suspect item assessment tool
  • Safety - Follow response safety precautions appropriate to the situation and seek assistance

Course Details

By the end of Suspect Item Assessment Training, participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the assessment tool and how to utilise it appropriately in relation to suspect items including knowledge relating to:

  • IED components
  • Power sources
  • Initiation systems
  • Switching principles
  • Main charge
  • Packaging
  • Enhancement
  • Secondary hazards
  • Actions on IED
  • Safety distances

Training will be conducted by one of our highly experienced trainer assessors.

Practical and theoretical activities drive the training experience to ensure that the training is engaging, interesting and relevant with the following training tools used:

  • Case studies
