Site Supervisor (also known as S123 / S1 S2 S3 / G189 / G1 G8 G9 / QMS / MSSS)

Site Supervisors and Site Safety Health Representatives (SSHR) in the Queensland Mining Industry need to have the appropriate skills and knowledge to perform their duties. These competencies have been determined by the respective Safety and Health Advisory Committee for these statutory positions at a coal and mineral mine as well as quarries.

This 2.5-day course includes Coal and Mining and Quarrying legislation, allowing students to respond according to their industry.

Course Details

Any individual appointed, in Queensland, to the role of either a supervisor or health and safety representative in the resource sector must hold the units identified in this course.

The units of competency have been identified as required by the Advisory Committee for Queensland's resource industry.

Deemed compulsory, the S123 course contains the units of competency for Supervisors and SSHRs in Qld’s resource industry.

S123 (QMS) course topics include:

  • Legislation and obligations for the roles
  • Undertaking the hazard identification process
  • Analyse risks, assess risks and recommend treatment
  • Contribute to the implementation of treatments and monitor effectiveness
  • Application of incident investigative processes
  • Collection and analysis of evidence as part of identifying contributing factors
  • Identification and documentation of recommendations and actions to prevent re-occurrences
  • Various methods of communication including potential barriers and the skills / tools to recognise and adjust
  • Communication of work activity information, follow ups and recording actions and outcomes using various methods
  • Recognising and addressing conflict including the resolution process

Training will be conducted by one of our experienced trainer assessors who have resource industry currency and supported by a strong knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.

Practical and theoretical activities drive the training experience to ensure that the training is engaging, interesting and relevant.

To complete the course, students must successfully complete all assessments connected to the 3 competencies outlined.

All assessments are completed during the course – no assessment activities need to be completed prior to or post the training course.

Upon successful completion of the course requirements, students will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency:

  • RIIRIS301E - Apply risk management processes
  • RIIWHS301E - Conduct safety and health investigations
  • RIICOM301E - Communicate information

Under the Queensland Coal Mining Regulation, competency must be refreshed every 5 years.

S123 is a mandated requirement for Site Supervisors and Site Safety Health Representatives (SSHR) in Queensland's Resources Industry.

The course consists of 3 nationally accredited competencies that the Safety and Health Advisory Committees for Queensland's resource sector have identified that these statutory roles need to hold.

The competencies included are as follows:

  • RIIRIS301E - Apply risk management processes
  • RIIWHS301E - Conduct safety and health investigations
  • RIICOM301E - Communicate information

The Site Senior Executive (SSE) cannot appoint a person to either of these roles without the person holding these competencies.

The Safety and Health Advisory Committees for Queensland's resource sector requires site supervisors and site safety health representatives (SSHR) hold the S123 Site Supervisor qualification.

This course has been known by other names and depending on the industry it may be referred to as G1, G8, G9 or QMS.

Yes, you can.

WorkSafe Connect does offer Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) as an option for students. You will be required to provide evidence of currency, competency and to satisfy the units of competency criteria.

This process can often take longer and be more expensive than the 1-day refresher training course, however we are always more than happy to talk through what option might be best for you.

Your S123 (QMS) Site Supervisor qualification must be refreshed every 5 years under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation.

Sites outside of coal mining may factor the refresher into their training scheme / standard and we suggest that you check with the site's training department to ensure that you are aware of their specific refresher requirements.

The course consists of a skill set of 3 nationally accredited competencies that the Safety and Health Advisory Committees for Queensland’s resource sector have identified that these statutory roles need to hold.

G2 is the next level of risk management training to the unit in the S123 (QMS) Site Supervisor course and involves completion of the following unit of competency:

RIIRIS402E - Carry out the risk management process

Coal mines generally request that a supervisor holds the G2 competency (although not mandated) and we offer it as a 1-day course.
